Architect to Family Housing Association (Wales) for the development of purpose-built, retirement accommodation for the over 55s at the Hazel Court sheltered housing complex in Sketty, Swansea. The 1.4-hectare site formerly contained two 11-storey tower blocks, which were demolished. The new development comprises 120 high-quality apartments configured to be able to receive extra care services. Ancillary and support facilities were also required including a village hall, café, fitness suite and library. The main support accommodation is arranged around a village square, which forms the social hub of the development. Within these blocks, the residential units are accessed off either internal corridors or external covered spaces laid out as streets, with a mixture of meeting and stopping spaces.
The project achieved a BREEAM standard of Very good. WYG assisted the client in developing the brief for this innovative building type, including setting the environmental performance criteria for the specific building user (frail and active elderly) and commenting upon appropriate passive and active low energy measures.
WYG Architecture has also designed Hazel Court South a development of eight extra-care flats and Hazel Court North, a 43-bedroom extra-care unit.
