WYG were commissioned by Cardiff University as the architect, lead designer and contract administrator for the refurbishment of the third floor of the west building of the Cardiff School of Biomedical Sciences (known by the school as BIOSI), a multi-storey building in Cathays Park built in the International Modern style in 1967. The fully refurbished floor included significant research laboratory areas together with a number of specialist research rooms. The project also included the refurbishment of the top three floors of the BIOSI building (5, 6 & 7), this also included extensive research laboratory areas together with a number of environmentally controlled rooms.
The project required the design team to work collectively to deliver a complex scheme to challenging timeframes to meet the Universitys term structure and research funding requirements. Key issues included coordinating and managing works within a live tower with contractor access from a small external footprint through lower occupied floors.
