Our clients brief was to create a rear extension connecting the existing stone villa to the large mature rear garden, previously only accessed through the small utility area. We designed a main new link through an open plan kitchen area into a modern light contemporary garden room extension with a snug and log burning stove. The project also included extending the existing utility room and creating a new back door cloaks area.
The new garden room uses large expanses of cedar framed glazing which opens onto wide steps leading to the garden. The lead roofs express the two distinct areas within the extension: the higher roof over the main garden room is raised up at the south side using high level clerestory glazing, the lower roof over the snug area creates a more intimate space.
Traditional materials were used; however the stone was laid in varying sized horizontal bands to create a more contemporary design. Supporting steel lintols are expressed and painted slate grey to match the soffits.
