Street to seat was the focus of this foyer extension for Scottish Opera with the client want8ing to literally open up theatre and opera as an art form by providing a welcoming entrance. Demolition of the former Café Royal building created the opportunity for a dramatic extension, addressing the street corner.
As in many Victorian venues, numerous staircases led up to upper balconies. The theatre experience has now been democratised by the installation of a central staircase to all levels, changing in form as it rises to add interest and drama. The theatre entrance has been relocated onto the central axis of the stage, signalled by a curved leather-clad wall to draw patrons in.
