This Marine Research Facility (SAMS) on the Dunstaffnage promontory outside Oban required a significant upgrade of its laboratories, research facilities, headquarters, teaching and staff accommodation within the curtilage of its existing facilities. SAMS undertake ground breaking marine and environmental research, so the corporate image of the architecture had to reflect this appropriately. The brief required a new image for the facility and create flexible state of the art headquarters, research, conference and teaching facilities to link this institute into other establishments around the world. The existing facilities also had to remain operational during the redevelopment.
