Hillswick Store is a listed building which forms part of the Hillswick House group on the shore front of St Magnus Bay in Shetland. Formerly a fishing bod and weaving shed, the building was near derelict and almost beyond the point of restoration. In an attempt to salvage the building and bring it back into community use a local charity and Malcolmson Architects worked together to prepare options appraisal, feasibility study and business planning as part of grant funding applications. Although the cost and scale of the project proved too great an undertaking for the group, a new private buyer within the community came forward. The restoration and conversion of the building was undertaken and a labour of love for all involved and has seen the completion of a self-catering apartment above a gallery and artists workshop. We worked alongside the client and contractor to salvage the historic remnants and create a new use for this old building.
