The client brief was to deliver an iconic youth centre facility, within budget, that included extensive refurbishment of an existing grade II listed building. In detail, the project needed to integrate a contemporary new-build, with feature landscaping and activity spaces to meet the needs and aspirations of young people and promote their personal development. User groups from all aspects of the youth community had to be consulted to ensure the centre focussed on social inclusivity. The brief required flexible internal activity spaces and activity zones externally. The site had to be carefully maximised and treated in an interesting and sympathetic manner to its surrounding environment. Although the overall use of the site remains a youth centre facility, the actual use of the existing buildings has been changed. Prior to the project, spaces were not appropriate in use, size or design for many young people's activities. Now the buildings are fit for purpose through a flexible, adaptable design solution.
