The O'Shea Hall forms part of the UNESCO Edinburgh World Heritage Site and covers an area of approximately 3.1 hectares over the South-facing slope of the Canongate behind the Royal Mile. The project saw the urban regeneration of previously walled and inaccessible private landholdings, creating a new urban village within the medieval context of Edinburgh Old Town. Working with Oberlanders Architects we developed the overall design to stage 3, the masterplan was then split allowing us to develop the Outreach Centre, Levels Cafe, blocks K, L and M and the communal kitchen to completion. Blocks K, L and M are the central component of the development and include 472 en-suite student rooms, arranged in a ñhalls of residenceî format and supported by easy to access common rooms and pantries. At the heart of the proposal is an expansive communal kitchen and social space unique within the UK.
