The Kilpatrick school site is characterised by its context, and sits amongst mature woodland on steeply sloping ground. The design focuses largely on the way in which the site, the landscape and trees support and engage with the learning activities within the building. One design criterion established early in the design process was that the building had to be single storey to aid wayfinding and accessibility. This has resulted in a low lying building that ïhugsÍ the ground. The plan is arranged around 2 large secure internal courtyards with all learning spaces planned around them. Each teaching space has full height glazed external walls which create a strong relationship between the internal and external spaces. The result is a harmonious fusion between the building and its setting, like a pavilion in a large garden with expansive views from all teaching spaces to either the wooded landscape or into the secured landscaped courtyards.
