James Gillespies High School previously operated a multi-building campus-style estate around A Listed Bruntsfield House. All parties were keen to maintain this. Five new buildings were created on the site, arranged to relate both to the centrally-positioned listed building and the surrounding Victorian tenements.
The new buildings vary from single to three storeys, depending on their location. By maximising internal and external spaces the design has created transformational teaching spaces which support current teaching techniques. Natural daylighting was fundamental and classrooms have a full-height glazed wall. A simple palette of materials reflects those used in the surrounding tenements.
