National Museums Scotland Collection Centre Building 1 Extension

Hypostyle Architects

Located at the NMCC in Granton this extension houses research and conservation laboratories to provide state-of-the-art facilities in the conservation and restoration of historical artifacts. With a wide central corridor linked to the existing main entrance Building 1 the new extension has been planned to accommodate visitors and enable them to view work in progress not previously available at NMCC.

The building is mainly clad in black glass faced rainscreen panels to complement the colour of the brick of the existing building while also reflecting its surroundings. Contrasting aluminium cladding and flashings also mirror the finishes of the existing building.

A high quality of design and materials was required as the extension forms part of the frontage to the Collection Centre to West Granton Road.
