The project was to provide research, laboratory, meeting, workshop and associated facilities for the Environmental Research Institute's work associated with renewable technologies and the environment. The building was developed to reflect the aspirations of the Environmental Research Institute and as such the building had to demonstrate innovation in the extensive use of timber as a construction material that has a low environmental impact, low carbon dioxide emissions, carbon lock-up using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), yet withstand often aggressive climatic conditions. The building was assessed under BREEAM and achieved an 'Excellent' rating.
