Built into the sea wall at Musselburgh, the existing historic steading was in such poor condition it had to be demolished and rebuilt, while opening up sea views. A new timber-clad, pitched roof extension on a previous raised terrace houses double height living, kitchen and dining spaces. A large, sliding glazed panel provides access to a garden terrace, while another 6m-wide panel provides panoramic views.
The choice of entrance location created a clear distinction between the public space in the new extension and the private bedroom and bathroom spaces in the stone steading.
