Ireland House, Tokyo
Graeme Massie Architects were one of five practices shortlisted to design a new Ireland House in Tokyo, comprising an embassy, ambassadorial accommodation and cultural facilities. Our proposal is inspired by the contrasting architectural cultures of Ireland and japan, and is composed of a sculptural mass enveloped with a delicate timber screen. The unified image of these two architectural elements acts as a symbol of co-operation and shared cultural appreciation. All interior spaces are planned in relation to outdoor spaces that are inspired by the abstracted landscapes and cultural traditions of Japan. They are a gesture of hospitality and provide places of respite from work and the intensity of metropolis of Tokyo.
