Two Low Carbon Houses, Isle of Berneray
These two new houses combine scale, proportion and materials, to create a sensitive, contemporary response to a rural setting. In an exposed site, the buildings' orientation and courtyard layout capitalises on expansive views, while creating shelter from the prevailing wind. Balancing large openings with a sense of enclosure, maximises natural light and connection to the landscape. Energy performance and sustainability were central to the brief - minimising costs in use, without major impact upon capital costs. Very high levels of "Better than Carbon Zero" insulation, kept energy requirements low, complemented by breathable construction, passive stack ventilation and locally sourced materials.
