The main public elements of the building are housed in the shell of a redundant but much-loved Odeon cinema which dates from 1936 with the theatre auditorium and backstage accommodation housed in a new extension. Extensive public consultation throughout the process resulted in strong engagement with the people of Chester.
Storyhouse has brought a purpose-built theatre and cinema back to the city of Chester after a 10-year absence, and has also created a ground-breaking new city library which is spread throughout the building. Storyhouse is open morning, afternoon and evening seven days a week and represents a revolution in the way civic, public buildings operate.
