Architype and the Hospice worked closely to develop the brief, rethinking the requirements of palliative care to develop a cognitive design that responded to specific needs of users, whilst sensitively balancing the buildings character to support patients emotionally. The existing curved 1980s building was in need of significant upgrade and expansion. The intensive refurbishment has repurposed it as the daycare provision, as well as providing a large new training-suite and office spaces. The old building is internally linked to the new extension, increasing the hospice's footprint by two-thirds. Centered around a central 'street', the new building accommodates 20 private ensuite bedrooms grouped in clusters of four, surrounding a shared lounge and with individual access to private terraces. Set in beautiful rural surroundings, the connection to the wider landscape is a constant throughout and accessible on a variety of levels. For more able patients, a circular walk encounters different gardens and holistic activities. For those less able, the carefully planned animation of the garden is visible from every bedhead.
