The new visitor centre has been designed in a traditional way to maximise the views back to the castle and make car parking, ticket buying and initial site interpretation under one roof and it is also a building that sits carefully low against the backdrop so not diminishing the impression of the castle as you approach the site. The repairs to the castle have been very much working with the existing fabric being careful to unpick the historical elements of the fabric and also to work with the 1920Ís restoration which has thrown up lots of particular technical issues such as stone fabric built of sea sand with a lot of salt which has resulted in efflorescence. The harling, repointing with lime and phasing the works for during the winter period when the castle is closed to visitors posed its own technical challenges which have been part of the brief. There have also been various cottages and properties adjacent to the castles which have been restored in sympathy with the materials paying particular homage to traditional construction.
