The project proposes an Institute for a New Music in the Highlands, located south of Forres, in Moray. It is situated on the Altyre Estate; an old Victorian dairy farm in an Italianate style which is rich in character and hints to a distinctly vernacular architecture.
Music is an essential part of creative learning, as it trains the mind to think completely independently. This institution seeks to push forward in innovation, encouraging self-directed learning through means such as improvisation, composition and experimentation with new technologies.
The transition between traditional teaching methods and the proposed one is reflected through a contrast between the existing architecture and the new one. The building aims to provide a polyvalent environment with a multitude of varying atmospheres, where novelty and innovation are possible, attempting to create inspiring spaces that give freedom to students to explore their full, musical capabilities.
