Project Description

Woodlands Densified is a housing project proposing a strategic regeneration of tenement courtyards, illustrated by a prototype situated along Woodlands Road, Glasgow. Analysis of the area revealed that the under-used spaces within Glasgow’s perimeter blocks invite a renewed awareness of this historic urban typology.
The proposal reinstates the once prevalent communal backcourt facilities and intends to reestablish family living near the city-centre, offering diverse and complementary amenities. The prototype suggests repairing an incomplete perimeter block and reintroducing a lively streetscape. Along an existing internal lane, additional housing and retail/working units are created. These upgrade the courtyards and allow the block to profit from community facilities such as a toy library, canteen and caretaker service. A home-zone ensures a car-free living environment, transforming the routes into extended living rooms. The mixed-use approach supports the community and reinstates traditional tenement backcourts as service and working spaces.
