About the project
Buchanan Lodge is a residential care home for elderly men with alcohol problems. The existing building was a 1970s care home, half of which was completely destroyed by fire. We created an accessible and sustainable building by reconfiguring the internal layout, adding bay windows to the bedrooms, then overcladding the existing structure with an insulated render system to increase thermal performance. An extension provides 40 en-suite bedrooms, a social hub connecting the dining room and games room, quiet lounges, kitchen, staff accommodation and landscaped courtyards. High quality materials like natural stone and zinc were used to clad the extension.
