RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland 2008 Winner

Architect:     Bennetts Associates
Client:           University of Edinburgh
Location:      Edinburgh

Judges' Citation: This project greatly enhances Edinburgh University’s facilities and makes a strong statement about the University’s future as a focus of international research and excellence in Informatics. By completing the Bristo Square perimeter of Edinburgh University’s central campus the buildings create a new enclosure, enhancing the collegiate feel of the area, while introducing new pedestrian routes through the heart of one of Scotland’s most important educational establishments.

The buildings are superbly detailed machines for study and research in some of the most advanced areas of human learning. Internal communications and high quality break-out spaces create a lively and friendly environment. Amenities, including comfortable seating areas and terraces at various levels, create opportunities for interaction and quiet contemplation, a considerable remove from traditional educational provision.

Bennetts Associates buildings simultaneously help to complete the University campus and to mend a significant wound in the city. They are powerfully contemporary in their design and yet welcoming in their materials and spaces.
